New research indicates that individuals who stop using blockbuster slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover reduced body mass much more quickly than those who end traditional diet and exercise programs.
Research printed in a prominent medical journal points out that while overweight people frequently drop about a fifth of their body weight while using the jabs, the mass comes back at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.
"Users purchasing these medications should be cognizant of the risk of rapid rebound weight gain when the therapy concludes," cautioned researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of regain suggests a return to pre-treatment mass in about 18 months.
Comparing Therapies
The study, which looked at 37 of trials involving thousands of participants, compared the effects of GLP-1 agonists with older methods.
Scientists note that people who shed pounds through diet and exercise typically see a more gradual weight regain—approximately 100 grams monthly—once they finish.
Understanding the Rapid Rebound
Nutrition scientists suggest the mode of action of the jabs is key to understanding the heightened rebound.
These medications mimic a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.
"Artificially providing GLP-1 concentrations far above than the body's typical production might result in the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also reduce responsiveness to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.
"Discontinuation of this GLP-1 'fix' leads to hunger is no longer kept in check, making excessive eating a significant risk."
A Lifelong Issue?
Health authorities recommend the jabs for people with obesity-related medical conditions, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.
A number of clinicians argue that, considering the likelihood of weight regain, the treatment is often ongoing.
This view is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the findings "highlight the persistent nature of obesity," comparing it to managing diseases like high blood pressure.
Patient Experiences
Individuals who have stopped the medication describe a powerful resurgence of appetite.
"It felt as if a trigger activating and you're instantly ravenous," described an individual.
This challenge is exacerbated if patients have not adopted permanent dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.
Significant Adoption
Survey data indicate that a significant number of people in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with interest continuing to grow.
- Use is greater among females than men.
- The middle-aged age group shows the highest usage rates.
- Many obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.
Ultimately, experts caution that while the jabs are potent tools for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent solution and long-term success likely depends on ongoing lifestyle management.
